The 16,020 teu CMA CGM Marco Polo departs from Southampton on Monday
THE world’s largest containership has arrived in Europe on its maiden voyage, calling first at Southampton before departing on Monday afternoon for Hamburg and Bremerhaven , writes Janet Porter .
The 16,020 teu CMA CGM Marco Polo , pictured, is the first of three ships of that capacity ordered by CMA CGM , and is deployed on the French line’s FAL1 loop.
In terms of the number of containers that can be loaded, CMA CGM Marco Polo is slightly larger than Maersk Line’s Emma Maersk class and will remain the biggest in service until the Danish line’s 18,000 teu vessels start to be delivered next year. The 396 m ship is registered in the UK, joining a growing number of other ultra-large containerships flying the Red Ensign.
CMA CGM Marco Polo entered service a month ago and will head back to Asia just after Christmas.
