When WAHINE joined MAORI on the Wellington-Lyttelton service in July 1913, the Union Company could claim with justification and pride that the service provided was unsurpassed anywhere in the world. During World War 1 WAHINE was employed at Gallipoli and later as a minelayer when she carried out 76 operations laying over 11,000 mines. During World War 2, WAHINE was again employed on a variety of missions in the Pacific and 38 years after launching was employed in the Korean War as a troop carrier, but came to grief when it ran aground and was abandoned on Masela Island in the Arafura Sea on 15 August 1951 while carrying New Zealand troops to Korea.
